Spain have been crowned FIFA World Cup champions for the second time after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in Sunday’s final at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
Ferran Torres emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in extra time to hand La Roja a hard-fought victory over the defending champions.
Spain dominated possession and controlled much of the contest, while successfully neutralising Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who struggled to make his usual impact throughout the match.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult after they were reduced to 10 men, allowing Spain to pile on the pressure before Torres finally broke the deadlock in extra time.
The victory marks Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, adding to the trophy they won in South Africa in 2010, and confirms their return to the summit of world football.
