Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a shocking 3-2 defeat to WAFCON debutants Malawi in their opening Group C match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on Tuesday.

The result dealt an early blow to Nigeria’s title defence and their pursuit of a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.

After a goalless first half, the match came alive in the closing stages as Malawi produced a stunning late attacking display.

Temwa Chawinga opened the scoring for Malawi in the 73rd minute before her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, doubled the Scorchers’ advantage six minutes later.

Nigeria were handed a lifeline in the 92nd minute when captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty to reduce the deficit.

The Super Falcons pushed for an equaliser, but Malawi struck again in the fifth minute of added time as Temwa completed her brace to restore the two-goal lead.

Nigeria refused to give up, with Uchenna Kanu scoring in the ninth minute of stoppage time. However, Malawi held on to secure one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition.

The defeat was particularly painful for Nigeria, who entered the tournament as defending champions after winning a record 10th WAFCON title at the previous edition.

Malawi, making their debut at the competition, showed no fear against Africa’s most successful women’s national team, with the Chawinga sisters playing key roles in the historic victory.

The result leaves Nigeria under immediate pressure in Group C, where they will face Zambia and Egypt in their remaining fixtures.

Coach Justin Madugu and his players will now be seeking a swift response as they continue their pursuit of an unprecedented 11th continental title.

The 2026 WAFCON also serves as part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the four semi-finalists securing automatic qualification.
