The University of Jos Alumni Association has called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the alleged mob killing of one of its graduates, Ibrahim Mbaya, and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the association described the incident as “barbaric, unjustifiable and a gross violation of the right to life.”
According to the group, Mbaya, an alumnus of the University of Jos, was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in circumstances that remain unclear.
“We are deeply saddened and outraged by the gruesome killing of our colleague and brother, Ibrahim Mbaya. No Nigerian deserves to die in such a manner, irrespective of any allegation against them,” the statement read.
The alumni association urged relevant authorities to speed up investigations, arrest those involved and ensure they face the full consequences of the law.
“We demand justice for Ibrahim Mbaya. The rule of law must prevail and not mob action,” the association stated, adding that the police should make the outcome of their investigation public.
The group also called on governments at all levels to intensify public awareness campaigns against jungle justice and strengthen efforts to protect lives and property.
“This incident should serve as a wake-up call for all of us. We must collectively reject mob killings and allow due process to take its course,” the statement added.
The association sympathised with the family of the deceased and pledged its support in their pursuit of justice.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
