A year ago, Brigadier‑General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu took the helm as the Director‑General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a bold vision to reimagine youth service in Nigeria and he hasn’t disappointed.
From the corridors of policy to the heart of NYSC camps nationwide, his leadership has been marked by purpose, progress and people‑centric reforms.
One of DG Nafiu’s earliest and most celebrated achievements was rolling out a new monthly allowance of N77,000 for serving corps members, a significant uplift from previous rates, aimed at improving their welfare and morale during service.
Across orientation camps, the DG has consistently encouraged corps members to embrace the rich cultural diversity of host communities, promoting national unity, mutual respect, and productive engagement beyond mere duty.
With a sharp focus on future‑ready youth, his leadership has seen partnerships and commendations for the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programmes, drawing interest from professional bodies looking to collaborate on youth employability and mentorship.
Under his watch, NYSC has actively engaged key partners, from government agencies to institutions to amplify opportunities for corps members and to align the scheme’s goals with Nigeria’s national development aspirations.
Throughout his first year, DG Nafiu has remained committed to enhancing the NYSC experience, ensuring that service to nation is not just a requirement but a springboard for growth, unity, and opportunity.
