The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier‑General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu
has marked one year in office, promising to strengthen welfare for Corps Members and improve operational efficiency across the Scheme.
Speaking at a ceremony in Abuja on Thursday to present his one-year scorecard, Nafiu
highlighted his administration’s three-pronged focus on transparent leadership, robust Corps welfare, and job creation initiatives.
According to him, the policy aim was to strengthen the NYSC Scheme to better meet the evolving needs of contemporary Nigerian society and ensure its future relevance.
“It is with humility and honour that I present my one-year report as the 23rd Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps.
“Over the past year, we have worked collectively to reposition the Scheme for greater impact, guided by discipline, excellence, and service to the nation,” he said.
Speaking on staff welfare and development, he said the Scheme had taken tangible steps to improve conditions for employees and Corps Members.
“We secured a Compressed Natural Gas bus to enhance transportation for staff and Corps Members. We successfully conducted the 2025 promotion exercise, with 696 senior and 139 junior staff promoted, and 173 staff approved for conversion to new cadres and salary grades. In addition, disengagement allowances were promptly paid to retired staff.
“We have approved upward reviews of kit, daily feeding, and transport allowances, effective 2027. These steps are part of our commitment to ensuring that Corps Members’ welfare remains a priority,” he stated.
Nafiu further said the scheme has recruited 850 new staff to strengthen operational efficiency and continued strategic engagements with key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Governors Forum and state governments, to ensure the Scheme meets its objectives.
“Through community development activities, cultural festivals in camps, and entrepreneurship programmes, we are fostering integration and creating opportunities for our youth to contribute meaningfully to national development,”
he noted.
