The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good Governance in Nigeria has called for the arrest and prosecution of activist and publisher, Mr Omoyele Sowore, over allegations that his activities pose a threat to national peace and stability.
The coalition made the demand during a rally in Abuja, where it also passed a vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Ajayi Oluwatosin.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, its National Chair, Mr Collins Eshiofeh, accused Sowore of using activism to promote actions capable of undermining the country’s security and governance.
The group alleged that Sowore was linked to external interests seeking to destabilise Nigeria, although it did not provide evidence to substantiate the claims.
It urged the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the allegations and ensure that appropriate legal action was taken in accordance with the law.
“The only thing this administration has not done is to arrest and prosecute Mr Omoyele Sowore. We are here today to demand that this be done without further delay,” the coalition stated.
“We say no to criminality in the name of activism. We say no to subversive elements and no to permissive terrorism.
“The sovereignty of Nigeria is not negotiable, and no individual, no matter how connected, should be allowed to hold the nation to ransom under the guise of opposition.”
The coalition urged President Tinubu and the DSS leadership to take what it described as the necessary final step by ensuring that Sowore was brought before the law and allowed to face due process.
“Our message to President Tinubu and the DG DSS is clear: continue your good work; we are with you. However, we urge you to take the final step and bring Sowore to book. Let the law take its course and let the world know that in Nigeria, no one is above the law,” the group said.
