…urges UNICEF to correct children’s death report
From Usman Aliyu, Birnin Kebbi
The Kebbi State Government Media Team on Monday paid a courtesy visit to Vision FM Birnin Kebbi as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration with the station in promoting responsible journalism and combating the spread of misinformation and fake news across the state.
The delegation, led by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, included senior media aides Ibrahim Abubakar Janvadi, Abdullahi Idris Zuru and other members of the state media team.
The commissioner stressed the need for stronger partnerships between the government and media organisations to ensure the public receives accurate and credible information.
Speaking during the visit, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK alleged that some opposition elements had been spreading false narratives aimed at undermining the achievements of the present administration.
He cited widely circulated reports about the so-called “Yaran Malam” as a new terrorist group in Kebbi, explaining that investigations revealed those involved were suspected internet fraudsters operating in Argungu Local Government Area, not a terrorist organisation.
The commissioner also addressed reports concerning the alleged deaths of children in Kebbi attributed to UNICEF, describing the information as misleading.
He said the state government had called on UNICEF to clarify the report and issue a correction where necessary to prevent public misunderstanding.
In his remarks, the General Manager of Vision FM Birnin Kebbi, Alhaji Shehu Malami Zagga, thanked the commissioner and the state media team for their commitment to addressing fake news.
He urged the team to continue highlighting the achievements of the Kebbi State Government while also serving as a reliable channel through which the concerns and aspirations of the people are conveyed to the government.
