Former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has agreed to become the new head coach of the Italy national team after accepting a long-term project presented by the Italian Football Federation.
Pirlo has given his verbal approval and is expected to sign his contract in the coming days once the remaining formalities are completed.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Pirlo accepted the proposal after discussions with senior football figures, including Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, who outlined the vision for the national team.
The former Juventus and AC Milan midfielder will take charge of the Azzurri on a long-term basis as Italy seeks to rebuild and compete for major international honours.
Pirlo enjoyed a distinguished playing career, helping Italy win the 2006 FIFA World Cup while also starring for AC Milan and Juventus. He later moved into coaching, managing Juventus and guiding the club to the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles during the 2020–21 season.
An official announcement is expected after the completion of the remaining paperwork and the signing of his contract.
